Alabama police, fire units struggle in weeks after tornado outbreak

Site preparation for a new Hackleburg Police Depart­ment to replace the one de­stroyed in an April 27 tor­nado could get under way within the next week.

A new building cannot come soon enough for this northwest Marion County town.

"I've been a police officer for (almost) 19 years," Police Chief Kenny Hallmark said. "I've had all kind of stuff happen, but nothing comes close to this."

In the nearly two months since the storms, Hackle­burg's police station has op­erated in four locations. The latest is in temporary mo­bile offices in front of the town hall.

"It is a struggle to do day­-to-day operations with ba­sically nothing," Hallmark said. "We lost everything we had -- from case files to some evidence."

From Hackleburg to Tus­caloosa, police and fire departments in municipali­ties leveled by the tornadoes are struggling to begin anew while still responding to emergency calls. They say they still have been able to adequately respond to necessary calls. Two of Hackleburg's police cars were destroyed, while another car remains in a shop for repairs.

The new Hackleburg building, estimated to cost $300,000, would replace the one built in 1962. The town council this week approved the purchase of land.

"We hope to rebuild a little bigger," Hallmark said.

For some of the smaller fire departments that lost fire trucks and equipment, the Alabama Fire Chief's Association has stepped in to help them recover by coordinating donations of equipment and apparatus from departments in Alabama and neighboring states, said A.J. Martin, the organization's president.

Already, the volunteer Hackleburg Fire Department scored a fire truck from Delaware firefighters, and the city of Cordova received a donated truck from the Truro Township Fire Department in Ohio.

Martin said the firefighters association arranged the transport of the fire truck to Hackleburg.

"Firefighters, whether Delaware or Hackleburg, help people who need help," said Martin, who also is chief of Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue.

Cordova Fire Chief Dean Harbison said the fire department building and five of his department's seven-vehicle fleet were destroyed in the tornado. The department is now operating out of an old pharmacy building.

Harbison said having the Ohio truck, which is a 1986 pumper truck that was refurbished in 1998, will be a big help, allowing Cordova to begin making repairs on two fire trucks.
