New GIE training facility teaches how to operate precision ag products
With today's high input costs and focus on timely planting, spraying and harvesting, precision farming is becoming more important than ever before.
"Precision farming allows the producer to be more efficient, and saves time, fuel and input costs," says Dean Torger-son, Ag Management Solutions (AMS) manager/training coordinator at Green Iron Equipment.
Green Iron Equipment is a locally owned John Deere dealership composed of five stores in southeastern North Dakota (LaMoure, Ellendale, Napoleon, Milnor and Ashley) and one store in northeastern South Dakota (Britton).
With the high technology available with farm machines and pulling equipment today, producers can control exactly where the seed and chemical is placed in the field while overlap is avoided, all with user-friendly controls and the touch of a screen.
With John Deere AMS, producers can drive down the field and turn without ever touching the wheel and keep an eye on the monitor display to know exactly what is going on with the equipment and in the field whether it be fuel used, seed in the grain cart or any one of a number of other machine functions.
"With John Deere's 175th anniversary this year, they will be coming out with a high-tech new combine, a new sprayer and a new four-wheel drive," Torgerson said.
But with that high technology, producers want to know how to operate that machinery efficiently from the day they start it up in the field.
And while Green Iron is like other dealerships with its emphasis on customer service and its quick service response time, it is going a step further with classes on precision ag technology at all its stores for both technicians and producers.
"Green Iron Equipment has really seen the value in precision farming that John Deere provides," Torgerson said, adding that John Deere technology is changing so much, Green Iron wanted to have all its technicians - and its customer/producers - up to date with operating and maintaining all the products it sells.
When producers buy that piece of equipment, Green Iron sends its technicians out to the field to help them set it up and run it. Then they offer them the class that goes with it.
"We don't just send them out with a set of directions and a manual," he said, adding that helping the customer understand how to operate the equipment is just as important to them - whether producers invest in a light bar for parallel tracking or invest in the latest 2011 John Deere 8R series tractors.
