Annual statewide ride aids fight against breast cancer
(June 3, 2011) More than 1,000 motorcycle enthusiasts are preparing for their journey to the Francis Scott Key Family Resort in West Ocean City this Saturday as part of Dick Gelfman’s 11th annual “Ride Across Maryland.”Since it’s inception, the annual ride and its accompanying activities have benefited the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer organization. Last year, the program donated $300,000 to the Maryland affiliate of the Komen foundation, which brought the grand total raised in the past 10 years to more than $2 million.
This year, proceeds will be used for grants that will be awarded to smaller breast cancer organizations, according to Pat Corcoran, president of Ride Across Maryland. Organizations can still apply to receive grants by calling 410-992-9999 or by visiting www.rideacrossmaryland.org .
“Ride Across Maryland is the largest third-party fundraiser for Komen in the world. This year, we hope to make a huge impact on some smaller organizations,” he said.
An opening ceremony will begin at around 8:30 a.m. Saturday at The Mall in Columbia, the main departure point.
The motorcycle riders, escorted by law enforcement, will then head toward Ocean City and pass various departure sites along the way so additional bikers may join. Approximately 1,100 riders traveled to the resort last year. Cars and trucks are also welcomed modes of transportation to Ocean City.
Most riders will arrive at the Francis Scott Key between noon and 4 p.m., depending on the routes they take. There will be food, entertainment, music, prizes, vendors, activities, bike shows, poker run, raffles and giveaways at the hotel.
As of Monday, more than 900 people had pre-registered for the ride, and depending on the weather, between 1,100 and 1,200 are anticipated to participate. Many breast cancer survivors also take part in the ride.
“Many of the same people participate each year,” Corcoran said. “I would say about 25 to 30 percent have been participating for at least five years.”
Registration will take place at the Francis Scott Key following the ride. The cost to participate is $30, but organizers ask riders to raise an additional $100 for a total of $130 per person. Those who meet the fundraising goal will receive one entry into a grand prize drawing for a $5,000 grocery giveaway. Participants who raise $300-$499 will get three entries into the drawing, and riders who donate $500 or more will have 10 chances to win.
