Online Universities

It's becoming increasingly difficult to get into Washington's colleges and universities, and tuition is rising rapidly. Next year it will cost over $10,000 to go to the University of Washington. But you can get a full year of courses for around $6,000 if you want to study online. KUOW's Sprince Arbogast looks at how online offerings compare to traditional college course work.

TRANSCRIPT

Dan Sweetwood is an instructional designer at Microsoft. He's getting his bachelor's degree online at Western Governors University. It's Washington state's only online non–profit accredited University.

Sweetwood: "It is really impossible for me to go to a typical brick and mortar school where, you know, I've got semesters and strict timelines and schedules to meet. I just couldn't do that. It would take way too long for me to take a couple of classes every semester and expect that within so many years, I am going to graduate."

Dan prefers taking classes in the evening at home, sitting in his comfy chair.

Sweetwood: "The online programs in general is the way for me to go. Because of the flexibility and because I can go at my own pace. As soon as I am able to prove that I can master something I take the test or submit the project and move on."

WGU Washington was created this year by the Legislature in partnership with WGU Washington's national parent organization. The school's first chancellor is Jean Floten and she recently left Bellevue College after being president there for the past 23 years. Floten says online schooling is more tailored to an individual's needs.

Floten: "A student can quickly go through the content that they already know, and get into the areas where they need to know more, and do that at their own pace. In order to leave one level and go to the next, they need to demonstrate that they have mastered the content and then they move on to complete the course of study."

WGU currently serves over 25,000 students from all 50 states. Pat Partridge is the school's vice president of enrollment. He says online university tuition is low for a reason.

Partridge: "We don't have buildings. We don't have a large campus. We don't have big heating bills. For the most part, we don't have the same kind of salary structure that a university or private college would have. So all of these things when combined mean that we are able to keep tuition relatively low, especially when you consider there is no state funding or big endowment backing it up.
