Editorial: Collier EMS suit ... Whistle-blower case has lesson for adult 'bullies'

You cannot be a bully.

Adults tell that to children all the time.

The adults who run Collier County’s Emergency Medical Services were told that the other day — by a jury.

Jurors listened to nearly a week of testimony revolving around a former EMS paramedic/helicopter pilot and his claim that he was bullied by supervisors after blowing the whistle on dangerous and foolish activity in the department.

He said he was assigned to clean toilets and take out trash.

Records show he was faulted and then fired for a while for flying too low over a Great Dock Canoe Race.

The official conduct of these supervisors made it seem as if they refused to believe their official conduct would be found out.

They were so wrong.

The jury awarded the pilot $70,000 to make up for a demotion, pay cut and loss of a second job because county bosses would refuse to be flexible with scheduling.

It’s a good thing for taxpayers that state law precludes other financial awards that are possible in the private sector.

Thank goodness the pilot had the stamina to follow through and go the distance. Lawsuits that invite spirited defenses from the entrenched and powerful are not easy on those who dare to bring them forward.

Cheating Death: Amazing Survival Stories from Alaska Review ...

This book is full of excellent stories of survival in the vast and varied wilderness of Alaska. What I enjoyed most about these stories was the sense of ordinary people up against the extraordinary forces of nature and circumstance. There's a personal flavor to some of the chapters. Almost as if you're hearing your neighbor telling a story about his cousin up in Petersburg. Is this the best written book in the world? No, but the true stories are pretty good. A chilling collection of survival stories from pilots, hikers, hunters, climbers, boaters, and fishermen who confront their mortality -- and live to tell about it! You will be astonished by the close calls of a young man who clings desperately to life on an iceberg in the lower Susitna River . . . a woman who struggles frantically to escape the cockpit of a small plane sinking beneath the waters of a remote bay in Southeast . . . the climbers who fight stubbornly to survive as avalanche after avalanche sweeps over them . . . and the diver who tangles with a giant octopus.
