FOOT CARE: Back to the Future | Coastal Breeze News

By Greg Spain, DPMr

What do you think about when you have to go to the doctor? Are you concerned about waiting for hours to see the doctor and even then only for a few minutes? Is it difficult to arrange a suitable time to actually get to the doctor’s office or clinic? Do you wonder how difficult it will be to enter the office? Are there stairs? Is there adequate parking? Do you wonder how far that the walk will be? These are just some of the concerns that I have heard from my patients over the last 30 years.

How about an alternative? What if you could arrange an appointment to suit your schedule at a time of your choosing and in your own home? to avoid the hassles and expense of a traditional office setting. This is not a unique idea. I am old enough to remember our family doctor coming to the house in rural Iowa. However, somehow that customer (or patient) service from medicine has long since vanished.

Regardless of where you are seen, the patient still needs and deserves to feel better. The mission and goal of PODIATRY AT HOME is to bring the foot care experience to you. It looks a little strange to see your doctor arrive with a medical bag that looks more like a plumber’s tool box than anything else.

Traveling with all of this gear will ensure that your every possible need can be met. I carry drapes and barriers to ensure cleanliness and that I leave your home as clean as it was before I arrived. Any foot examination or treatment requires instrumentation. All of my instruments are surgically clean- even cleaner than an office setting.

After 30 years of practice experience, I came to realize that a vast majority of the podiatric services rendered in an office setting can be done just as easily in a home. The usual conditions of thickened toenails, corns and calluses are easily dealt with. Several foot deformities and foot pain can be addressed as well.

For most of the foot care, Medicare and other insurance will cover the costs. I have no set office hours. I have seen patients on the weekend and in the evening. Of course, I am available during the day as well.

It is important to know your doctor. As for myself, I have practiced for 30 years. My family has recently moved here from the Pittsburgh area. During that time, I came to realize that 90% of what I do could be done in a home setting. Along the way, I did achieve the necessary credentials offered by my profession. I am Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics. I have surgical privileges at Physician Regional Medical Center.
