Leading healthcare facilities and executives from across the U.S. were honored at the fourth annual GetConnected User Conference for their achievements in Interactive Patient Care (IPC) initiatives that resulted in better patient outcomes and facility performance improvements.

The Indiana Heart Hospital (TIHH) in Indianapolis, IN, was awarded top honors with the Overall Achievement award for outstanding interactive patient care achievements resulting in performance improvement in quality, service and operations. Patient Satisfaction award was presented to Parker Adventist Hospital in Parker, CO for outstanding improvements in both service and patient satisfaction through the use of the GetWellNetwork Interactive Patient Care solution. The hospital made notable improvements in patient satisfaction scores in the HCAHPS categories of Nursing Communication and Medication Teaching.
Quality and Safety award was presented to Banner Health Cardon Children's Medical Center in Mesa, AZ, for outstanding accomplishments in improving the quality of care for their asthma patients. Following the engagement of patients and families in the GetWellNetwork Asthma Care Plan, readmission rates at Cardon Children's decreased by 60 percent and compliance with the pediatric care measure for the Asthma Home Management Plan of Care increased from 30 percent to 74 percent.
Finance and Operations award went to Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC, for generating new incremental revenue by integrating retail pharmacy with the GetWellNetwork solution to provide patients with the ability to fill their prescription from the bedside. In the past 12 months alone, MUSC has generated more than $1.6 million through GetWellNetwork pharmacy referrals.

The introduction of health information technology systems does not create measurable improvements in the health outcomes of nursing home residents, according to a new study.
Researchers examined the effects of health information technology systems at nursing homes, measuring clinical, functional and quality-of-care outcome indicators. The study also evaluated residents’ opinions on the technology.
Seventy-one percent of residents surveyed said they believed handheld devices used in electronic record keeping improve care, while 73 percent said they are glad staff uses such devices to track care.
However, researchers concluded that “no statistically significant impact of the introduction of HIT on residents was found on any outcomes, with the exception of a significant negative effect on behavioral symptoms.”
Unless further proof can be found that HIT measurably improves patient outcomes, nursing home operators should reconsider its implementation, the study said.
The team of investigators, from Weill Cornell Medical College, Columbia University Stroud Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, interviewed residents at five treatment and five comparison facilities within the New York City metropolitan area. Two personal assessments of 761 nursing home residents were conducted — once before their facilities adopted HIT programs and once after.
