Full circle: St. Louis TV personality to release CD

ST. LOUIS — "Offbeat America’s" Patrick Clark always loved music, even before his TV career, but now he is releasing his latest CD that was six years in the making.

Many might know Clark from his day job as a feature news reporter with KPLR-TV Channel 11 in St. Louis and its "4 p.m. News With Patrick Clark." Other people probably know him from "Offbeat America," a show he hosted from 2005 to 2008 on HGTV, which the Travel Channel re-aired until a few months ago.

But Clark will release his third CD, "Spiraling Toward Madness," Friday at Blueberry Hill in the University City Loop in St. Louis.

"I’ve had someone describe it as Collective Soul meets Howard Jones," Clark said about the new CD.

Doors open at 8 p.m.; the show starts at 9 p.m. at Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room. Alton favorites Audri and Aaron will open for Clark. Tickets cost $10 and include Clark’s new CD with admission.

"They have beautiful harmonies and songwriting," Clark said about the duo who appeared on "4 p.m. News With Patrick Clark" and performed at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, earlier this year. "I wanted them to open; I called them, and Aaron said, ‘Absolutely.’"

Clark’s music on "Spiraling Toward Madness" is more ska, horns and adult alternative rock versus Audri and Aaron’s acoustic folk pop. Five of the 11 tracks on Clark’s CD are laden with horns, including Erick Storckman’s trombone. Storckman, formerly of The Toasters and Clark’s cousin, wrote all of the horn parts on Clark’s new CD. The Toasters, who still are together, were one of the first American bands in the third wave of ska, a movement that started in the 1980s. Storckman now teaches music and plays in jazz combos and trios in New York City.

Also, playing on the CD are Steve Jankowski on trumpet, who plays in the band Chicago, and Tom Timko on tenor saxophone, who plays with Blood, Sweat and Tears.

But Clark wrote all the lyrics on the most transitional CD of his music career. Clark based a lot of lyrics on his divorce and feelings for his ex-wife, who he still is not quite over, he said.

"It’s deeply personal and pretty raw as far as emotion," said the singer, who had married a woman from Belleville, where he graduated in 1989 from Althoff Catholic High School. "She’s the inspiration for a lot of these songs. I try to write a lot of the lyrics so that it’s broad, so people can relate to facing trials and tribulations.
