Are men or women better at networking? It depends

Men working in the cosmetics industry are more savvy at online professional social networking than women, but the reverse is true for women in the ranching and tobacco industries.

Those findings may seem counterintuitive, but that's what data researchers at LinkedIn Corp. found after looking at the activities and networking ratios of the professional network's 100 million members.

LinkedIn senior data scientist Scott Nicholson said in a blog post that overall, men are more savvy than women at networking, but even the data team was surprised after examining specific industries.

"Women are more savvy networkers in the ranching industry. Men are more savvy networkers in the cosmetics industry. Wait, what? That was exactly our reaction when we saw the initial results for our latest data insights blog post on the differences in social networking behavior between men and women," Nicholson wrote.

The team also looked at how men and women network at the company level.

"In the U.S., some examples of companies where males are the more savvy networkers are Walmart, Kaiser Permanente, and, surprisingly, Mary Kay (a majority female company)," he said.

In the United States, women are savvier networkers than men in: alternative dispute resolution, tobacco, alternative medicine, ranching and international trade and development

But men are savvier than women in medical practice, hospital and health care, cosmetics, law enforcement and capital markets.

The data team said several factors could explain the results, including seniority, job function and the need for the minority gender to work harder at making connections to break into or get ahead in the particular industry.

Finding a flight: Hipmunk, the San Francisco travel-search startup, has released an update to its free iOS application that brings it to the iPad. The service, which was co-founded last year by the creator of Reddit, says it offers a better user experience than competitors like Kayak and TripAdvisor. It has no advertisements, for example, and shows search results in a visually appealing Gantt chart.

"If we take away the painful part of figuring out which plane to get on, then we make our lives easier," said Danilo Campos, Hipmunk's iOS developer.

With the update, Hipmunk becomes a universal app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. For now, it only allows flight bookings - to book a hotel you'll need to use the website. But frequent fliers may want to check out Hipmunk's iPad app to see whether it improves on their travel-search experience.

A Gantt chart (commonly known as project chart) is used extensively by project managers and other people involved in scheduling. While it is similar to a timeline in that it deals with time and events, the format and purpose of a Gantt chart is very different. The Gantt chart is a table with one task for each row and time in the columns. The unit of time chosen depends on the length and detail of the product, but some common units are weeks, quarters, months, and years. Usually there is a column at the left listing the tasks, then columns for start date, end date, and duration, followed by the columns for time. Each task has a bar extending across the time columns, representing the duration of the task. Milestones and critical path lines may also be used to add further detail to the chart. Milestones are important checkpoints or deadlines represented by small symbols in the time columns. Critical path lines connect task bars to indicate a dependence of one task upon another’s completion or commencement.
