Commerce Twp. dad is charged in death of his 4-month-old son
A 22-year-old Commerce Township man was arraigned on Father's Day in the death of his 4-month-old son, who died a week ago from head injuries.
Richard L. Gillis III was arraigned in the death of Richard L. Gillis IV on Sunday by Oakland County 52-3 District Court Magistrate Marie Soma and remanded to the Oakland County Jail without bond.
The baby died June 14 after being taken off life support. The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide from craniocerebral trauma.
According to Oakland County Sheriff's Office investigators, Gillis made incriminating statements leading to a warrant being issued Friday by Oakland County 52-1 District Court Magistrate Judith Holtz.
Gillis was arrested Saturday in Walled Lake by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Apprehension Team and deputies from the Commerce Township substation. He does not have a criminal history, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's Office Lt. Clay Jansson said Monday that Gillis was a normal guy who lived with his son and his son's mother in Commerce Township.
He declined to discuss what Gillis said to investigators regarding his son's injuries. The Sheriff's Office did not release the mother's name or additional information.
Commerce Township Fire Chief Joe Schornack said the medic unit responded to the June 10 emergency call with two paramedics, who found the child in respiratory distress.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the baby had bruises and scratches. Schornack said a sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene and decided to drive the medic vehicle, rather than wait for an ambulance, while the two paramedics stayed in the back with the baby.
He was taken to Huron Valley Hospital and then to University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital.

Bloomfield Hills, MI (PRWEB) June 13, 2011
Michigan’s new “super drunk driving” law appears to be steering people charged with drunk driving offenses toward help instead of a jail cell, Oakland County criminal defense attorney Paul J. Tafelski said today.
He hailed a recent report in the Lansing State Journal that showed the new law isn’t cramming jails with drunk driving offenders but instead diverting motorists with alcohol problems into rehabilitation.
“This so-called ‘super drunk driving’ law appears to be helping troubled people get the assistance they need, instead of further overcrowding our jails as some had feared,” said Tafelski, founder of the Bloomfield Hills OWI/DUI/DWI defense firm of Paul J. Tafelski, P.C.
“That these motorists are getting help for alcohol problems through sobriety courts and other programs is a good thing for these individuals and for the public,” he said, adding that rehabilitation can help prevent more alcohol infractions as opposed to just punishing offenders.
Michigan’s “super drunk driving” law took effect Oct. 31, 2010. It was aimed at motorists who have a bodily alcohol content (BAC) greater than 0.17 grams per 210 liters of breath, 100 milliliters of blood or 67 milliliters of urine — more than twice the legal limit.
