Creedence Clearwater Revisted to offer up the classics at Artpark
LEWISTON — Of all the bands performing at Artpark this season, Creedence Clearwater Revisited may have the most recognizable hits. That's impressive considering the acts that are scheduled perform. From 1969-71 Creedence Clearwater Revival had nine top 10 singles including "Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Green River," and other classics that will be on the set list. Also in 1969, CCR played at Woodstock. "We were the headliner on Saturday night. We didn't go on until late because of electrical problems. It was after a long set by the Grateful Dead and we had been there all day backstage enjoying all the comforts, which was in complete contrast to what was going on with the audience," Cook recalled. None of the band's performance was included in the Woodstock movie, reportedly because John Fogerty didn't think the performance was representative of the band. It wasn't until 1994 as part of the Woodstock commemorative box set that any of CCR's performance was commercially available. “I felt it was a journeyman performance. I'm glad some of it has seen the light of day. The real story to me wasn't the bands, it was how the crowd came together, and the music was just window dressing," Cook recalled. CCR was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, while Cook and Clifford were in attendance to receive the honor; they were not allowed to perform at the ceremony. "We didn't find out until we got there and one of the stagehands told Doug we weren't going to perform. We had been rehearsing for weeks and were surprised when we found out that on the night we were being honored we couldn't perform," Cook said.
