Samsung Series 5 Chromebook review
It’s been nearly two years since Google introduced its vision for a new kind of operating system centered around a web browser. In November of 2009, Google unveiled Chrome OS and promised that it would eventually herald a new type of netbook with larger displays and touchpads and super-fast 7-second boot times. it’s taken more than 18 months, but today the first Chrome OS laptops, (or Chromebooks as Google likes to call them) are scheduled to hit the streets.
The Acer Cromia is available for $380 and up while the Sasmung Series 5 has a starting price of $430. For $500 you can also pick up a 3G capable model with 100MB of free data per month for two years from Verizon. Samsung loaned me Series 5 Chromebook for the purposes of this review. Although I’ve been a big fan of the Google Chrome web browser for the past few years, the Series 5 is the first device I’ve used which is designed specifically to run Chrome OS and nothing else.
If you look at the Samsung Series 5′s spec sheet it actually looks like a lot of other notebooks on the market. It’s powered by a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 dual core processor and GMA 3150 graphics. But while most Windows 7 netbooks have 10 inch displays and 1GB of memory, this Chromebook has a 12.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display and 2GB of RAM. It also has 16GB of solid state storage in lieu of a hard drive.
You can play local music, movies, and pictures on the Chromebook. There’s a built-in file browser and support for USB storage devices or SD cards. But the media players that are built into the OS are pretty basic. Ultimately the Series 5 is designed for use with web apps and you’ll likely have a much better experience if you think of Chromebooks as devices for accessing the web and little else.
That’s harder to do than you might think. While I spend most of my waking hours sitting in front of computers with web browsers open, there are some tasks that are still much easier to accomplish with native apps. While online image editors such as Picnik , for instance, offer most of the features I need for cropping, resizing, or retouching pictures, it just doesn’t feel right to have to download an image from the web, upload it to the web, edit it, download it again, and then upload it to WordPress in order to post it on my web site. I’m not even going to try to do the same thing with a 2GB video file.

in a 1.6″ thick 15″ HP laptop here, and can easily zip shut the bag. Of course, the slimmer 1″ Macbook Pro slides in with ease. The sleeve itself doesn't add significant bulk – you could easily slide a sleeved notebook into a regular backpack.
Acer ships a surprisingly svelte desktop replacement laptop with an 18.4-inch display, but it falls a little short. June 07, 2011, 9:17 PM — When I first hauled out the Acer Aspire 8950G from the backpack, I almost dropped it--not because it was that
It's still pretty light compared to a full sized laptop, but it's not quite light enough that you'll forget it's in your backpack. The 12.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display is big, bright, and sharp compared with a typical 10 inch netbook display.
If you've seen it or read our review of the Level8 Atlas Backpack you will know the quality of the material and workmanship on Level8 cases are top notch. Level8 currently makes sleeves for both 11" and 13" MacBook Air, as well as 13" and 15" MacBook
Apple Rumors » Level8 Atlas laptop backpack review
Availability: Out now
The Level8 Backpack is an ideal solution for the traveller who, as they say, “has a lot of crap to deal with.” It’s a compartmentalized backpack with tons of pockets to stow all your electronics, cables, and immediate travel needs in a form factor that’s optimized to get your through security and keep everything organized. It won’t replace a suitcase for clothes, but for your tech, it’s ideal.
Let’s start with the laptop. In the far back (the part that rests against your back), the Level8 has a foam-insulated compartment to protect your laptop (up to 17”) from shock on all sides. The compartment zips out so the laptop can lay flat (but still connected) from the rest of the backpack, complying with new TSA rules—meaning you don’t have to take your laptop out of the bag (unless, of course, the rules change).
When zipped closed, the space between also has enough room to store another laptop, though it won’t have the shock protection.
The other three areas of the Atlas feature numerous pockets for cables, pens, iPods/phones, power cords and whatever other sundries you might want to throw at it, with a combination of mesh pockets, zippers, and Velcro to keep everything organized. For toting around, the Atlas has two handles: one made of simple canvas like you’d find on any backpack, the other has a rubber handle over what looks like the cable from a bike lock riveted to the case for heavy duty lifting. Fully packed, the Atlas might fit under an airplane chair, but it should fit neatly into an overhead compartment.
And when you need to use your backpack as, you know, a backpack, the Atlas has foam-padded shoulder straps along with foam pads to protect your back and shoulders. The straps also have loops of fabric on their front, allowing you to clip items to them, tactical-style.
The Atlas is designed for someone who needs to move a lot of personal tech around on his back. The padding will keep your laptop secure while the other compartments are just large enough for, say, a DSLR camera and all the cables that go along with being a mobile techie.
