Beatles widow celebrates first UN Int'l Widows Day with art show
UNITED NATIONS, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Beatles star John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono inaugurated an art exhibition Wednesday to mark the first International Widows Day designated by the United Nations (UN).
The International Widows Day, which falls on June 23, was launched by the Loomba Foundation in 2005, which campaigned for the UN's recognition of that day.
Ono, a Japanese artist and peace activist, exhibited an extension of her ongoing online project titled "My Mommy Is Beautiful," a tribute to women and mothers around the world.
"Mothers are the heroes of families, but in many societies widowed mothers have no voice and are not valued as human beings," Ono said at the ceremony, noting she knows the pain of losing "a soul mate."
Ono said that the vast majority of widows in the world lead an insecure existence.
She also touched on the value of the United Nations as an institution that is now needed more than ever because it "allows us to express and communicate truth."
Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and president of the Loomba Foundation, a leading NGO dedicated to widows' rights, said at the event that "there are few resources in the world available to help widows achieve a safer and more comfortable existence, to promote their equality, and to pursue justice on their behalf."
The exhibition recognizes how widows are marginalized, which is "the first step in alleviating the plight faced by many women in this forgotten group," Blair said.
Some 245 million widows worldwide and more than 500 million children of widows suffer from diseases, violence and other crises, and more than 100 million widows live in poverty, according to the Loomba Foundation.

John Lennon once turned to Art Garfunkel for advice about a possible Beatles reunion in the mid-1970s.
Garfunkel had set aside his ongoing feud with Paul Simon for a series of reunion concerts and Lennon wanted to pump him for information about the get together after revealing he was receiving offers to team up with Paul McCartney.
The Bridge Over Troubled Waters singer recalls his chat with Lennon - in the bedroom of the Dakota building home he shared with Yoko Ono.
"Incredibly disarmingly, he said to me, 'Artie, you worked with your Paul recently ... I'm getting calls ... that my Paul wants to work with me and I'm thinking about it ... How did it go when you worked with Paul?'
"He was measuring his situation - the great John Lennon with Paul McCartney - with Paul and Artie and testing me out as if to make sure that my ego is fully established as a colleague of his," he said.
A thrilled Garfunkel felt that his answer could be the catalyst for a Beatles reunion and he responded, "John, remember that there was a musical blend that was a great kick; if you can return to the fun of that sound and musical happenings with your old buddy and ignore the strands and complications of history, what I found with my Paul is the harmony and the sound happenings are a full agenda.
They'll keep you busy and you'll have fun."
Garfunkel left the meeting feeling confident that Lennon and McCartney would reunite. Appearing in new movie Beatles Stories, he says, "The subject seemed very straightforward and uncomplicated."
But the songwriting super-duo never did work together again - and Lennon was shot dead outside the Dakota building five years later.

There were tons of signs that they would at least work together again in a brief way, Paul was even prepared for John to come to New Orleans but then Yoko returned to the picture and suddenly Paul was out again. For some reason John could have both Paul and Yoko, I actually don't think Paul would have had any problem having both John and Linda but Linda tended to be more understanding of the depth and specialness of their relationship. She would have liked to for them at reunite in some way.
