OPINION Luke Hagen column: A successful first trip to the Missouri River
I’ve always been intrigued with the amount of non-residents who come to South Dakota, seeking walleye in the Missouri River.
When I was growing up, my dad — an Alexandria, Minn., resident — used to make plenty of trips in the spring and summer to Chamberlain. Some were for pleasure, some were for tournaments.
Dad always seemed to do well on the Missouri, catching walleyes on rock banks by pitching a jig head with a twister tail or trolling Rapalas. It was always his enjoyment to trick fish with artificial bait, instead of using night crawlers or minnows.
That’s one trait that I’ve picked up from dad. I love fishing with twister tails, not needing to use bottom bouncers or spinners to catch fish.
I’ve picked up a lot of traits from him, actually. Hunting tips and tricks. Ways to save money. And most obvious is probably my stubbornness. My wife, Shannon, will attest to that.
On the day before Father’s Day, I spent the morning and afternoon on one of my father’s favorite South Dakota fishing spots — the Missouri River.
Although dad was fishing in his native Minnesota ponds over the weekend, my brother-in-law Mark and I trekked to Chamberlain in search of some fish. On the trip, I not only enjoyed my Missouri River fishing, but I enjoyed my first white bass catches, too.
On Thursday and Friday, Mark and I had checked some spots on my usual favorite local lakes around Mitchell. Our luck wasn’t great, as we never got into great numbers of fish besides some 12- to 14-inch walleye on Lake Mitchell.
Saturday, we woke at 4 a.m. and were the first truck and trailer at Chamberlain’s boat launch. We headed north on the river at daybreak and starting pulling Rapalas.
Mark, who had spent plenty of time fishing the Missouri before, said he’s never seen the water levels this high in his life. He estimated the water level at the boat launch was about 10 feet higher than his past trips to Chamberlain.
Buzzing up the river at 6 a.m. ran a chill down my spine. The air temperature had to be cooler than the 55-degree water and the sun was barely peeking over the tall banks of the river.
With nearly no luck by about 10 a.m., my sleepiness and lack of fish in the boat had me on edge.
By that time, I didn’t care if we were catching walleye, gators (northern pike), bass or crappie. Anything would have given me a better view of the Missouri River after nearly four hours of slow fishing.
