NC deputies arrest man wanted in local robbery

Sheriff's deputies in Haywood County, N.C., have nabbed a man accused of robbing a Highlands County man of $950 at gunpoint April 15.

The suspect, Robert Edward Branning, was arrested May 4 and booked into the Highlands County jail Monday after a private extradition company returned him. Branning, 22, of Clyde, N.C., is charged with armed robbery.

Branning is accused of robbing Wenseslao Romo, according to a warrant affidavit filed by Avon Park Detective Nathan Coogan.

Romo told Coogan that he met Branning after going to ex-girlfriend Priscilla Feliciano's residence in Wauchula "to pick her up to run some errands."

Branning answered the door when Romo arrived and said he was Feliciano's brother.

"Branning stated Feliciano was not at home and stated he would help Romo look for Feliciano in Avon Park," Coogan continued.

Branning grabbed a black duffel bag and went with Romo, traveling to two homes in Avon Park, including one at 128 N. Summit Ave., where Branning spoke with Richard Pinckney, his cousin, the affidavit stated.

Branning then asked Romo to drive him to a friend's house and asked him to turn on Lake Isis Drive. Romo complied and stopped his vehicle after turning onto the street.

Branning asked Romo for $10; Romo pulled $950 out of his pocket and gave him $10.

Branning, duffel bag in hand, got out of Romo's vehicle and told Romo he "wanted to show him something," Coogan wrote.

Romo got out of the car and walked to Branning, who "reached his right hand into his bag and retrieved a black … handgun and forcefully told Romo to give him the rest of the money."

Romo did, and Branning ran from the street into orange groves.

During their encounter, though, Branning "entered his phone number … in the contact list of Romo's cell phone," Coogan wrote. The number's area code is for a portion of southwest North Carolina in the mountains of the Tar Heel State.

During Coogan's April 20 investigation, Romo picked Branning's photo from a lineup Coogan showed him.

The photo came from a prior arrest when Branning had been booked into the Highlands County jail.
