Through art, disabled residents at Hattie Larlham Center making huge strides
MANTUA, Ohio -- His hands can't grasp the paint roller, he can't produce the words to say that he wants to make rows of brass-colored narrow stripes that zig and zag.Still, Raja knows what he wants on the white canvas, and Matthew Brady knows just what it takes to get Raja to communicate his wishes.
Do you want this part to stay white?" asks Brady, an "art tracker" who works in the Creative Arts Program at Hattie Larlham Center , a Portage County facility for the profoundly disabled.
Raja, 31, flutters his eyelashes.
Like when he lifts his leg or gives a gurgling laugh, it's one of many ways Raja conveys the word "yes." And when he wants to answer "no," he sits stock-still.
It takes months, sometimes years, for him to complete a painting by answering hundreds of questions posed by the art tracker, whose job is to put the brush strokes where Raja wants them. Yet Raja's artwork is so distinctive that his pieces are often snapped up as soon as they're done.
He is one of 83 disabled adults and children who cannot walk or talk but are steadily revealing their inner artist, through an innovative program that's boosting the profile of this 50-year-old agency. ( Hattie Larlham Center does not release last names of residents because of medical confidentiality laws.)
Want to see paintings and pottery created by the disabled artists in their Creative Arts studio? Here are some places to see and purchase their work:
• June 24-25 and July 2-3: Boston Mills Artfest, 7100 Riverview Road, Peninsula.
• July 9: Art on the Hill, Prospect Street in downtown Mantua.
• July 15-Aug. 15: Accessible Expressions Ohio 2011 touring exhibit at Hattie Larlham Center for Children with Disabilities, 9772 Diagonal Road, Mantua. Artist reception will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on July 21.
• Sept. 10-11: Art in the Park, Fred Fuller Park, 497 Middlebury Road, Kent.
Through art sales, the center's Creative Arts Program brings in thousands of dollars, most of which goes to the participants themselves. And it's enriching them in another way, staffers say, by teaching stunning new communication skills to people considered to have the mental capacity of 6- to 12-month-olds .
When Chief Executive Officer Dennis Allen launched the program in 2007, he hoped to give participants a chance to express themselves through art. "Little did we know at the time that they would go as far as they've gone," he said. "Now we understand this could just be the beginning. We haven't found the horizon yet.
