"Watch the Tram Car, please": Walking the boards in Wildwood

Anyone familiar with the Wildwood Boardwalk recognizes that command. The yellow Sightseer Tram Cars are celebrating their 63rd birthday in Wildwood this year, but did you know they were built for the 1939 New York World's Fair? For $2.25 either way, the Sightseer takes riders between 16th Street in North Wildwood to Cresse Street in Wildwood Crest, along concrete paths on the boardwalk. Our usual strategy is to walk the boards (do they still say that or am I dating myself?) in one direction and then ride the tram back to where we started. It's more fun than it looks, really. This year we noticed that there are self-propelled toy tram cars for sale in some of the shops that actually say the famous phrase. The Sightseer may be kitschy, but it's iconic.

Some people go to Wildwood for a week, a few weeks, or an entire summer, and for them the boardwalk is a way of life and source of employment and entertainment. For those of us who live in a "suburb" of Wildwood, walking the boards is a special treat for once or twice a summer. Everyone's got their favorite food--Mack's Pizza, Lime Rickys, French fries with vinegar, chocolate-covered frozen bananas, Kohr's orange-and-vanilla swirl cones, and there's always something new and different to try. On my boardwalk bucket list you'll see the Deep-Fried Oreo that I have not had the courage to try yet.

While I was more the shopper, saving my money for important, much-needed souvenirs like hermit crabs, T-shirts, and costume jewelry, some friends of mine used to save their quarters all year to play the various games of skill and chance on the boardwalk. This was never my thing, as the prizes were never that alluring to me. I must admit that one year, 1984, I think, Cabbage Patch dolls were really big and I spent $3 or so trying to win one. And I did. I picked a little boy wearing an orange windbreaker and blue jeans with curly brown hair who's name turned out to be Kirkwood. Kirkwood went with me to college where he was kidnapped once and safely returned for some ransom that probably included a pizza. (He's still with me if you'd like to meet him sometime.)

And then there are the rides. I've always loved the rides. My father generally went on the old Hunt's Pier wooden roller coaster called the Flyer with me, and my mother on the Log Flume .
