Art meets history meets fantasy at MisCon 25 in Missoula

This is no bulletin, but there are a lot of unrealistic looking females in video games out there.

Understand anatomy is a key part of illustration, Tiffany Toland said Saturday morning.

Toland, from East Helena, is an accomplished artist of the fantasy and gothic world, and she's the guest artist this weekend at MisCon 25, Montana's premier science fiction convention.

"To get it right, you have to stop going, ‘Oh, well, I don't think she should have that much fat on her thighs,' " she told to a small gathering of people at Ruby's Inn and Convention Center on Reserve Street.

"I tend to prefer women drawn with wider hips, especially when you're drawing warriors. They tend to look like men when you start putting them in armor ... "

By exaggerating the hip curve a bit, she said, you can get the feminine effect.

Toland is a busy woman at MisCon's esoteric annual four-day gathering, which continues through Monday. She's joined, as per tradition over the past quarter-century, by a guest writer (Carol Berg of Colorado, whose mythic fantasy novels have earned national and international acclaim) and a guest expert on something else. In this case something else is historic dress. Kass McGann of Easton, Pa., is displaying and talking about costumes and clothing from past centuries around the world.

All are kept busy with a steady string of workshops, but there are dozens of other activities - and some of the strangest conversations you'll ever overhear - up and down the halls, stairs and conference rooms at Ruby's. There's also some very big dogs, including 3-year-old Clyde, a Great Dane that tugs MisCon vice president Justin Barba through the halls.

"People who are nerds love their animals," explained one such proud nerd, MisCon treasurer John Bromley.

Matthew Ridlon sat down at a table in the breakfast room with four others and stood up a few minutes later with an aluminum foil "hat" on his head. Besides fitting into this year's theme of "Silver," playing off the 25th anniversary of MisCon, the "tin-foil hats" are said to provide protection from mind control.

"It's either going to protect or it's going to work to my detriment, I'll have to wait and see," joked Ridlon, who lives in Little Rock, Ark.

He's at MisCon with his brother and a friend, clad in a spiffy white lab coat with a logo that bears the embroidered name "Dr. Mathulu." It's a play on his own name and Cthulhu, Ridlon said.
