Leiningen versus the ants, and the three-inch flying cockroaches ...

I used to be a vegetarian. For ten years I have eaten nor beast, neither fish nor fowl. I did not eat meat for moral reasons, I thought it was wrong to kill animals for food. But, like many idealists, I finally surrendered.

Six years later, vegetarianism totally avoided, the Midwest's daughter is found alive in the deserts of Tallahassee, who, like almost all of Florida is essentially a partially drained marshes. Before moving to the warm swamps, I was also against the use of insecticides to kill pests common household insects such as ants or wasps. My fiance and I moved into a house in a neighborhood hippie Nice to Tallahassee with an owner in the same spirit which, unlike many Southerners, do not spray the garden and the house on a monthly basis with insecticides.

Tallahassee is full of bugs. In winter, many of them disappear. It does not freeze here, but it is cold enough to drive the underground fire ant and flying cockroaches three inches (or "palmetto bugs" as people call them nice) in well, I do not know exactly where three-inch flying cockroaches go in winter, but they are not in my house, so I do not really care.

We had lived here for a year when I discovered I had a life-threatening allergy to fire ants, an invasive species native to Brazil that wreaked havoc on much of the southeastern United States. Fire ants dig underground tunnels large, which means that if you poison a hill, another emerges three to four feet away in a matter of days. I learned this when, tired of fire ants, after two trips to the emergency anaphylaxis complete, I tried to use poison to kill all the mounds in our yard. It did not work. Southerners recommend pouring dry oatmeal mounds (blew the ants) or gasoline (perhaps gives the ants chemical burns?), But none of these methods are expected to work well. Finally, the southern states do not anteaters, native to Brazil, which keep this particular species of fire ants in check. And so I started spraying poisonous white powder on my site as toxic fake snow, leaving angry red mounds like bald boil about to burst.

The three-inch cockroach flight, which live naturally outdoors in the live oaks, and will, I found, if they get lost inside your house and you just ignore them, are not, as I thought they would when I moved here, most of the pesky bugs in Florida. For me in particular, fire ants are a number, but sugar ants rank number two. Sugar ants are small ants that come inside his house in late spring, when temperatures start hitting 90 on a regular basis. They are insidious. They come across. We had to throw boxes of cereal boxes and cracker bags, bags of brown sugar, white sugar, powdered sugar, cereals and other dry sweets.
