Treatments for excessive sweating

The lawyer, 31, was sitting across from a client in the conference room of her office. Although an air conditioner was cooling the room, she began to sweat as if the temperature had been 40 degrees centigrade. The sweat stains on her white blouse grew bigger and bigger.

“I was embarrassed to death,” the woman recalled. She has hyperhidrosis, a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably.

“The term hyperhidrosis is used when a person sweats at inappropriate times and suffers because of it,” said Erhard Hoelzle, a dermatologist at Oldenburg Clinic in northern Germany.

How much the condition interferes with one’s life depends in part on the social environment. A construction worker, for instance, is probably not bothered by excessively sweaty armpits.

For a receptionist at a plush hotel, however, sweaty hands resulting from hyperhidrosis can be a serious problem. The hands may become so wet, in fact, that beads of sweat roll off them.

There are two kinds of hyperhidrosis, primary and secondary. In the latter case, the sweating occurs as a result of another medical condition such as an infection, an illness, a hormonal disorder or poisoning. Doctors then treat the underlying condition.

In primary, or focal, hyperhidrosis, no cause can be found. “We don’t know where this sweating comes from,” said Uwe Wollina, head physician at the Dermatology and Allergology Clinic of Dresden—Friedrichstadt Hospital. “Maybe the problem lies in the person’s head, or maybe in the nerves that lead to the sweat glands.” The regulation of body temperature by the brain is complex.

“There’s a range of just one or two degrees in which the body feels comfortable,” Wollina said.

If its temperature begins to rise or sink too much, the body takes vital countermeasures. In hot conditions, blood flow is increased to the skin, a process visible in a person’s reddened face.

This facilitates heat loss to the air. Meanwhile, the sweat glands secrete water, which evaporates on the skin and thereby cools down the body as well.

Hyperhidrosis affects approximately 1—3 per cent of the adult population in industrialized countries. The condition usually begins during puberty or young adulthood. Excessive sweating occurs mainly in the armpits.

(Chemicals  that are found in  store-bought antiperspirants and deodorants). Parabens have been linked to breast cancer and Aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease . Though, from what I found on the internet, no causal link has been established.  It would seem that the less contact the human body has with these chemicals, the better off you are. For the past couple of months,  I have been using Arm & Hammer’s “Essentials Natural Deodorant” (Fresh scent) that is both Aluminum and Paraben Free are a class of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution, makeup, and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives. Their efficacy as preservatives, in combination with their low cost, the long history of their use, and the inefficacy of natural alternatives like grapefruit seed extract probably explains why parabens are so commonplace. They are becoming increasingly controversial, however, because they have been found in extremely low concentrations in breast cancer tumors. Parabens have also displayed the ability to weakly mimic estrogen (a hormone known to play a role in the development of breast cancer).  No causal link between parabens and cancer has been established, however.
