82 degree dewpoint in Twin Cities breaks record
MINNEAPOLIS -- We're dealing with record dew points this week all across the state. We tied our all-time state record of an 86 degree dew point on Sunday in Madison, Minnesota. The previous record was in St. James and Pipestone in July of 2005.
The Twin Cities tied its all time highest dewpoint of 81 degrees Sunday night at 9 p.m. and then trumped it Tuesday at 3 p.m. when the dewpoint hit a tropical 82 degrees. The previous record prior to this week for the Twin Cities was in July of 1999. Both of those dew points occurred after rain had moved through allowing even more moisture to pool in the atmosphere.
Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. we tied for the highest heat index at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, reaching 118 degrees. At 4pm in Eden Prairie we reached 120 degrees for the heat index.
Another day of high heat and oppressive humidity is on tap for Wednesday. Hang on, a brief respite from this stretch of heat is on the way.
Temperatures will creep towards the century mark Wednesday afternoon along with tropical dew points in the 70s and potentially a few low 80s. The humid air will push the heat index into the dangerously high 110-115 range.
Later Wednesday night, a few possibly heavy thunderstorms are possible ahead of a front which will be rolling through triggering our cool down.
This will set the stage for more comfortable air with much lower humidity and somewhat cooler temperatures on Thursday.

July 3: Consider this the unofficial start of monsoon if you think monsoon doesn't really begin until the daily average dewpoint is at least 54 degrees or higher. The dewpoint on July 3 was 59 degrees — up from 41 degrees on July 2.
And what is a dew point anyway? From barometric pressure to hailstones, what questions do you have for Tom Russell? Went to NYC last Thursday through Sunday, specifically to see Central Park. With the heat I was expecting an empty park.

In short, the dewpoint is one of several different measures of humidity, or how much moisture is in the air. It is the temperature that air becomes saturated. When an air mass is saturated, it contains equal amounts of liquid water and water vapor and
Hey David, What is Dew Point Temperature and why is it the better ...
July 25, 2011
Good day everyone. I am David Saurer for another installment of the David’s weather blog for tuscweather.net. What a summer we are having in the Tuscarawas Valley. High heat, high humidity, oppressive sun, and severe weather have been wrecking havoc all over Northern Ohio in the last few weeks.
We’ve dealt with our hottest days since 1995 this past week alone. Some locations in the Valley did reach 100 degrees or higher. Heat Indexes soared up to dangerous levels of 110 to 120 degrees.
So, many of you are probably asking yourself, “What in the world is causing such dangerous heat levels and why?” My task in this article is to tell you the exact reasoning for the question.
First off, we need to look at a vital ingredient that factor into all of this -Â DEW POINT TEMPERATURE.
What is dew point temperature? It is the temperature at which the air can no longer hold all of its water vapor, and some of the water vapor must condense into liquid water. The dew point is always lower than (or equal to) the air temperature. If the air temperature was to cool to the dew point, or if the dew point rises to equal the air temperature, then dew, fog or clouds begin to form. At this point where the dew point temperature equals the air temperature, the relative humidity is 100%. If there is then further cooling of the air, more water vapor must condense out as even more dew, fog, or cloud, so that the dew point temperature then falls along with the air temperature.
While relative humidity is a relative measure of how much water vapor is in the air.
In very warm, humid conditions, the dew point temperature often reaches around 75 to 77 degrees F and sometimes exceeds 80 degrees. No matter how hot the temperature gets, a dew point measurement of 75 degrees F always represents the same amount of water vapor in the air.
During the summer (as what we are experiencing now), the dew point temperature, not the relative humidity, is usually a better measure of how humid it feels outside. It is also a good measure of how much “fuel” is available to form showers and thunderstorms, with a higher dew point representing more water vapor available to convert to rain.
Interesting isn’t it? That’s why I love weather so much - you learn everyday.
One last question remains though, “Why is it a better indicator of atmospheric moisture content?
@ what is the dewpoint? what does it mean? I knew this at one point, but high school was so long ago.
@ well, it depends what size your feet is. Haha! It changes everyday and depends on dewpoint alititude. I think.
