Ask Amy: Grammy's photos don't click with parents

Without my or my husband’s permission, my mother had professional pictures taken of our son. She chose which pictures she likes and plans to send them to everyone on both sides of our families.

It is my opinion that professional pictures should be arranged or at least cleared by the parents. I would have liked to have had input into how the pictures turned out.

Do I have a legitimate reason to be upset, and should I be honest with her about it? Or am I being childish and should just accept the generosity? -- Conflicted Daughter

DEAR CONFLICTED: You should be honest with your mother, but treat this not as a directive but a corrective.

I agree with you that it is important for parents to be aware of any “outside” ventures involving young children. This includes commissioning professional photographs or signing a child up for lessons or sports teams.

You say, “Mom, I can totally understand why you wanted to do this. But Brad and I wish you had run this idea past us first. Can you understand that this is the kind of thing we feel like we should know about in advance?”

Your mother might have wanted to surprise you with the photos. She may feel wounded. But this is a boundary issue, and your mother must remember that as much as you love and trust her, you and your husband must be kept in the loop.

DEAR AMY:

I have recently finished my third year as a volunteer coach for a team on which my daughter has also been playing.

In one of the last games of this season, I made a decision to call a certain play and it failed. The result was that it knocked us out of the tournament and the season was essentially ended.

It was a close game and the decision was risky, but I felt it was the right decision given the circumstances. After the game was over, some of the parents were verbally berating me and my decision in front of the team. I didn’t respond but rather lined the girls up for the handshake.

When I encountered the parents the next day, some would not talk to me and a couple even turned their heads or physically walked away when I approached. Up until this decision, I had received a lot of encouragement and praise from all of the parents.

I thought they were friends and we were common in our goals of success, but I question that now. Any suggestions on how I should handle this? -- Struck Out

Pears are also very popular in fruit baskets.  Related to the apple, these great  food options can bring soft colors  to any arrangement along with a great  buttery sweet flavor.  Like apples, these fruit can be located year round and have roughly 100 calories  also .  They are a great  source of Vitamin C, K and copper as well as dietary fiber.  The riper this fruit is, the more antioxidants you will profit from.  Pears are great sliced up in salads, cooked with winter greens or poached.  This variety of use makes them a  perfect   option  for your fruit basket as well. Grapes add a great visual texture to your fruit basket selection  as well as nutrition.  One cup of these bit sized beauties is about 100 calories jammed with Vitamin C and Vitamin K.  Like the two fruit above, grapes area also low in cholesterol, saturated fat and sodium but higher in sugar than the two above.  A quick and easy snack with no preparation, peeling or mess! 

Citrus fruits such as valencias, mandarins , tangerines, limes or lemons also almost always find a way into your typical  fruit basket.   Most medium sized citrus fruits carry  roughly  60-70 calories making them a great snack alternative high in fiber.  Citrus fruits also contain Vitamins A,B1, B2, B6, C and E, Niacin, and Folate as well as good   amounts  of potassium, magnesium, copper and zinc.   Not only are citrus fruits common in baskets, they are also a symbol of good luck and new starts .  This is a great fruit to add in congratulatory or holiday fruit baskets.
