Chile and Israel Sustainable Adventure Travel Hotspots

A new study has revealed the world's top adventure travel destinations according to sustainable principles, and Israel, the Slovak Republic and Chile all ranked highly.

The Adventure Tourism Development Index (ATDI) was published by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, George Washington University and Vital Wave Consulting, and took survey data and quantitative data into account. The study was split into two lists of top destinations for adventure travel in developed and developing countries, and other developing countries to make the top ten included Estonia, Czech Republic and Bulgaria. Slovenia, Jordan, Romania and Latvia made up the rest of the ten highest ranked developing countries.

Switzerland came top in the list of developing countries with sustainable adventure tourism principles in place, with Iceland and New Zealand holidays claiming second and third places respectively. Canada and Germany took fourth and fifth places, with Sweden, Ireland, Norway, Finland and Austria completing the list.

"The ATDI ranks countries based on key touristic value pillars including sustainable development policy and entrepreneurship, putting importance on these issues which we now know are crucial not only for communities and the environment but also for business success," explained Christina Heyniger at Vital Wave Consulting.

"Looking at this year’s rankings we see Eastern European countries again dominating the emerging-market rankings, and also the appearance of Canada in the top 10 for developed countries," she added.

The countries listed were not ranked on current success and visitor numbers, but on the strength of their potential as adventure travel destinations in the future. The countries were assessed on ten factors, including natural resources, sustainable development, entrepreneurship and its own infrastructure.
