A large percentage of the quilts - nearly half of which were created by artists new to Quilt National - make use of machine stitching and quilting. Fabric dyeing, particularly with Japanese influences, plays more of a role than stitching.
Quilts must include at least two layers of cloth, stitched together at certain points. In some of the works, the result is elegantly minimalist: Memory Cloth #11: Worn is a large, witty collection of interlocking arcs in reds and bright oranges. Included in the arrangement are, as Shearrow says in her artist's statement, "maxi-pad covers I will never need again, fingernail polish that I would never be caught dead wearing anymore and chocolate wrappings that got me through it all."
Columbus fabric artist Ann Rebele's Forgotten but Not Gone: Mary Ester For more than two decades, the Quilt Surface Design Symposium has attracted national and international quilt artists to central Ohio - with the latest event scheduled through next Sunday at the Columbus College of Art & Design.
