Felix J Palma: The Map Of Time (HarperCollins)

Somewhat let down by its packaging, The Map Of Time delivers far more than its bland, generic cover design promises.

Originally published in Spanish in 2008, it won the University of Seville prize for literature. And, while it’s not strictly steampunk, it’s a wonderful homage to the science fiction of the Victorian era, blending fact and fantasy into a mind-boggling tale that wrong-foots its readers at every twist and turn.

The book is divided into three interconnected sections, all of which revolve around the character of HG Wells – fittingly, as the publication of The Time Machine seems to have been the catalyst for most of the action. In the first, the wealthy Andrew Harrington falls in love with prostitute Marie Kelly only to lose her to Jack the Ripper. Eight miserable years after her death, Harrington decides that the moment has come to kill himself. But his cousin Charles has come up with a plan that may restore Kelly’s life. It hinges on the latest sensation to sweep fashionable London society: time travel.

Elsewhere in the city, Claire Haggerty is inconsolable because she’s an independently minded woman restricted by rigid Victorian society. She also clings to the dream that she will one day experience love on an epic scale. The kind of love which could defy the laws of time itself, perhaps? Finally, Wells is called in to help Scotland Yard after irrefutable proof is found that a visitor from the future is carrying out a murder spree.

Palma plays a brilliantly sustained cat and mouse game with his readers while confronting these Victorian gents and ladies with modern ideas about alternate universes and the consequences of changing history. There’s romance, ethical dilemmas and the fully realised character of HG Wells himself, who gradually realises the awesome responsibility he holds in his hands.

Weighing in at just over 500 pages, The Map Of Time is nevertheless an incredibly pacey read, and beautifully written. To discover that this is the first book of a projected trilogy, rather than being a wearisome thought, is actually an exciting and tantalising prospect.
