Newest frozen yogurt shop is family affair

With their newest venture — a Menchie’s frozen yogurt franchise — Beth has taken the forefront as president and is running the business with help from the Steeles’ daughter, Rebecca, and their son, Andrew.

Beth has moved to Athens from the Atlanta area to open two of the frozen yogurt stores, she said.

“This is a brand new adventure for me, and I wanted to be here to oversee everything,” she said. “Andrew will be our manager and run both stores. Rebecca will be handling marketing.”

The Steeles planned to open Menchie’s this weekend in Colonial Promenade Beechwood, next to Larry’s Giant Subs, and they expect to open the second Athens location this fall at Georgetown Square on Barnett Shoals Road.

Menchie’s provides another option in the growing self-serve frozen yogurt market. The shop operates seven frozen yogurt machines that each dispenses two flavors. The machines are equipped with a mixing lever, though, so that customers can swirl the two different yogurts together, Beth said.

“We’ll try to pair the flavors so they are complementary of each other,” she said.

Customers can select a 16-ounce cup or a fresh waffle cup made in the shop, then proceed to the yogurt dispensers and fill their containers with as much yogurt as they like.

Menchie’s yogurt is soft and creamy and comes in a range of flavors. The store also serves up a variety of low-carb and no-sugar-added yogurts.

Anyone looking for a non-dairy frozen dessert can choose from Menchie’s sorbets. The store always will have two flavors available.

Menchie’s stocks more than 30 dry toppings such as chocolate chips, pecans, jelly beans, coconut flakes, M&M and caramel cups, Beth said. At the “chill bar,” the toppings include a dozen or more items, including not only fresh strawberries, raspberries, peaches and bananas, but also cinnamon apples, cheesecake bits and fudge brownies.

To finish off their creations, customers can pump hot fudge, caramel or marshmallow toppings from several heated dispensers.  

Once a cup is filled, the customer pays 44 cents an ounce. The average cost is between $3.50 and $4.

For customers who want yogurt at home, the store keeps a small freezer filled with a 32 oz, pre-packaged selections, usually when they change flavors. The packs are pre-$ 6.99 each.
