CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan swimmer Albert Subirats has been suspended for one year for failing to notify FINA’s anti-doping authorities of his whereabouts three times within 18 months.
Subirats has 21 days to appeal the decision by swimming’s world governing body, which imposed the ban despite noting he might not have intended to evade doping tests.
In a Twitter message Wednesday, Subirats denied any wrongdoing, saying he sent details of his whereabouts to the Venezuelan Swimming Federation and thought that the information was being passed on to the proper anti-doping authorities. The FINA panel ruled that both swimmer and the federation showed a lack of understanding of the reporting system, but that the ultimate responsibility fell on the athlete.
Subirats won the 50-meter butterfly in a meet record at the world short-course championships in Dubai last year and was third behind Michael Phelps in the 100 butterfly in the 2007 world championships in Melbourne, Australia.
