Chepstow castle offers chance for pupils to bring history alive

SCHOOLS in Monmouthshire are being encouraged by CADW to bring history lessons alive at Chepstow Castle, where visiting pupils will have the opportunity to experience history for themselves.

The excitement of lords and ladies, medieval treasure and exploring the castle inside and out is just part of the experience that Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, has lined up at Chepstow Castle between June 6-24.

As part of the Welsh National Curriculum Key Stage two and three history and literacy education programme, pupils will be given the opportunity to learn and explore in an interactive and imaginative way. Pupils will bring medieval life alive by helping the Lady in Waiting or Steward to set up the Earl's chamber in readiness for the arrival of Lady Alicia Bigod in 1294, as well as learn about whom does what in the castle, and take part in duties. They will also have the opportunity to investigate the contents of the castle's treasure chest, containing over 70 replica medieval artifacts.

Adrienne Goodenough, Cadw's lifelong learning manager, said, "By bringing pupils to this magnificent setting to take part in our specially devised education programme, children will be allowed to touch, hear and see real history outside of the classroom environment."

'Preparing for her Ladyship' sessions are available in both Welsh and English between June 6-24, at 10.30am and 12.45pm daily.

Each pupil is charged at £2.50 and accompanying adults free of charge. School groups are welcome to spend the remainder of their visit exploring the castle.

Self led education visits to Chepstow Castle are free of charge, but must be pre-booked.
