Wells wins three titles

Six Marlborough table tennis players travelled to Nelson last weekend for the Nelson Open.

Peter Wells took three titles back to Wairau Valley when he beat Nelson's Gary Basher in the final of the over-60 men's singles and then combined with Basher for a win in the doubles. He also took out the over-50 men's doubles with Wellington's Malcolm Wong. Wells also reached the semifinals of the over-40 and over-50 singles and the final of the men's over-40 doubles with Warren Haszard where they lost to a Canterbury/Wellington combination.

Haszard qualified for the knockout stages of the second-grade, over-40s and over-50s and reached the final of the second grade mixed doubles and over-40 events with a Nelson partner.

Matt Pigou reached the final of the second-grade plate but lost a closely fought match. He also qualified for the knockout stages of the under-21 singles.

Sam Flaherty made it to the quarterfinals of the under-21 men's singles, the under-18 boys singles and the final of the under-18 mixed doubles. Jack Sawyer reached the semifinal of the boys under-15 singles.

Fynn Sawyer also reached the semifinal of the boys under-15 singles. He lost in four close sets in the final of the under-13 boys singles. The boys combined to win the under-13 doubles.

The Young Guns are back on top of the interclub competition following last week's 10-2 win over Warriors. The classy Matt Millar made his debut for Young Guns and won a skilful encounter with Nigel Schultz who later thwarted a comeback from Sam Flaherty to win their match by 11-9 11-5 11-13 9-11 11-8. Matt Willis claimed the Warriors' second point with a four-set win over Matt Pigou. Arawa had an 8-4 win over Bamboo Garden but it was far from straightforward as three of their points came from five-set matches. Arawa No1 Jeff Sawyer won his three singles and two doubles but had a real tussle with Boe Aitchison. Aitchison claimed the first two sets with some bold hitting before Sawyer recovered to win 11-5 in the fifth. Taine Swete backed him up with two wins while Ping Muanwong won two singles for Bamboo Garden.

Peter Wells was again in good touch, not losing a set in his singles matches as Wairau Valley fought out a 6-6 draw with Marlborough ASB. Jack Taylor captured two wins and was beaten by Kath Gilchrist in his first match. Gilchrist went on to win another singles and two doubles.

The Connect 3 side – comprising Monique, Grace and Bonnie Aitchison – played out a 6-6 draw with Koromiko. Both Monique and Bonnie recorded two victories and Grace one. For Koromiko, Darryl Jones won all of his matches and combined with Audrey Ford and Clive Aitchison for doubles wins. Ford also won a singles match.
